What's inside

18 chapters, one for every topic on the SSAT Upper Level Math section. Every chapter includes an SSAT Practice section with real test-style questions and full worked explanations, and most also include a Skills Check to test the foundational skill behind that chapter – including the shortcuts I teach in tutoring sessions and in my book, Hacking the SSAT Upper Level Math: Shortcuts & Strategies for Every Question Type.

Why a diagnostic instead of another practice test

Practice tests tell you a score. They don't tell you why. This workbook is built the other way around: instead of grading you on test-style questions alone, it isolates the underlying skills so you can see exactly where the gap is – a foundational math fact that's not automatic yet, a shortcut you haven't learned, or just speed under time pressure. That's the difference between knowing your child struggled with Chapter 8 and knowing they struggled with special triangles inside Chapter 8.

A note from Kelly:

I wrote this because I wanted a tool to pinpoint where each student's actual gaps were, rather than finding out in week 3 that everything felt harder because they'd forgotten their times tables. This test covers topics taught up through 11th grade, but most students take it in 8th grade, and no prep system I'd encountered seemed to fully account for that gap between a student's true starting level and the material being tested. This workbook solves that: after working through it, you'll know exactly where your knowledge and skill gaps are.

This practice workbook is also meant as a starting point for my book, Hacking the SSAT Upper Level Math. I wrote the book so that an 8th grader could actually learn all the math they need for the SSAT, without having to wait through 3 more years of school first.
